KIRBY CHARACTERS: Absorbing Man

Absorbing Man. Digital

About a year and a half ago I created a new blog call "Kirby Characters." It was completely separate from this blog. It didn't work out. I just couldn't keep it going. So, welcome to what I hope will be a somewhat regular feature on this blog. Tune in each Thursday (at least that's what I'm gonna attempt) for a new Kirby Character.

I love Jack Kirby comic books. In this feature I will be sharing drawings of characters created or co-created by Kirby. Some, like the one above, appeared on that failed blog, but this feature will mostly showcase new illustrations of classic, strange, and obscure comic book characters.

Today would have been Jack Kirby's 97th birthday. Here's some info on Kirby:

Absorbing Man was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby for Marvel Comics. His first appearance was in Journey into Mystery #114 (1965)

Star Wars Wednesday #7: DARK LADY

Lumiya. Ink on bristol board, 6x9.
Drawn with a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen

Here's another character created for those old Marvel Star Wars comics, but one that went on to be used in the Expanded Universe beyond that comic series. Actually, I can't think of any other characters created for Marvel Star Wars that was used more in the EU. I'd be interested if any of you could name some.

Action Comics #1

Action Comics #1 just sold for 3.2 million dollars. The story is here (There is some bad language in the comments). If you're like me and curious what these million books look like, there's a video for this one (also contains bad language in the comments):

Star Wars Wednesday #6: LUKE

I wanted to practice inking with traditional brush and ink on those comic pages I did a few years ago. Here's a panel from one of those pages for today.

Also, this news on the use of practical effects in the new movies sounds great!

Tune in next week for a new piece.

Star Wars Wednesday #4: A BOUNTY HUNTER DRAWING THAT ISN'T BOBA FETT

Zuckuss, Ink on bristol board, 6x9.

Here's a good example of how the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen lends itself to more expressive drawings.
