Darth Vader Kills Palpatine

Darth Vader Kills Palpatine, India ink and Copic marker on bristol, 9x11.
I always wanted to ink those Star Wars pages I did a while back (use the Star Wars label at top of page and scroll through to see). I doubt I'll have time to do that, but I did want to practice inking on this panel that I thought stands on it's own. I blew it up to about 9x11 and transferred it to bristol board. I inked it with Pitt pens and used a Copic marker for the gray.

SILVER SURFER

I really abused the Pentel Brush Pen on this one. All of the black was inked with it. Somehow the brush is still keeping its shape! I'm impressed. The gray was done with a Copic marker.

BATMAN (and my new toy)

This was inked with a new toy--the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. I was able to make some nice lines on thefigure and the background was just quickly sketched to get more of a feel for the pen. The grays were done with a copic marker. It'll be interesting to see how the brush holds up over time since it stays saturated in ink. I'm impressed with the pen so far. I'm going to push it on my next piece and see how much abuse it can take.

IRON MAN IN CHARCOAL

Iron Man. Charcoal on paper. 18x24.
Haven't used charcoal in a while and I need to get a feel get used to it again for a class I'm taking. It's really a mess to use at home! I'm not sure why I decided to draw Iron Man to practice charcoal, but it was fun. I might have to do more of these.

WASP

I haven't done much in the way of female characters on this blog. I don't think the Avengers movie is going to have enough female characters, so I decided to draw the Wasp. I guess her powers would seem silly on film, but she probably should have been attempted for the movie. I think she was the character that named the team. Anyway, I went with the early costume. Also, I haven't mentioned this since it came out, but I loved Captain America: The First Avenger.

I'm planning on doing a bunch of black and white drawings. A 9x12 commission like this is $30 if you are interested. I'm also taking requests just to keep ideas coming and my pencil moving. See my last post for more info.

STAR WARS

The pages I will be posting in the next few days have been posted on FB but the scans weren’t very good. I recently had better quality scans made in order to practice some of the things I’m learning about Photoshop in my Digital Media and Techniques class. So, I thought I’d show them to the world one last time. Here’s the first page of a Star Wars submission I did a few years ago.
Star Wars sample page 1. Graphite on Bristol, 11x17.
In the spring of 2008 I visited the Star Wars exhibit at the Franklin Institute. All of the ways they showed how the science fiction has become science and how science was used in the science fiction were pretty interesting. But that’s not really why I was there. It was kind of hard to care about the science when you’ve got an actual wampa staring at you through a glass cage! Or a life size sand speeder just out of reach! Or the ominous black armor of Vader looming over you! I was there for the actual movie set pieces they had on display, most of them from the original trilogy. I wish I could have stayed longer and gotten more photos, but there’s only so much geekiness Wendy could take.
This visit renewed a desire to draw the Star Wars universe in some way. So I decided to do some samples for Dark Horse Comics, the publisher of Star Wars comic books. I chose to illustrate the opening scene of The Truce at Bakura, one of the early Star Wars novels. I knew I wanted to draw original trilogy stuff and this scene takes place immediately after ROTJ. I did some research and studies of everything I would need in this scene, adapted the novel to comic in a script and then drew the pages. I decided to send copies to several editors at Dark Horse. I think there ended up being about ten packets sent out.
After all of that I went and read their submission guidelines again. I am a dummy sometimes. I had misread a huge clause that basically said they won’t even look at material based on licenses they publish! Oh well. I like to think THAT'S why they didn't call me. It was still fun to do and maybe I’ll give it another shot some day—but perhaps with an original story or something from public domain.

THE DOORWAY

The Doorway. Acrylic on panel. 18x24.
For our color theory final we had to do a self-portrait. It was pretty open. Some students did abstact or surreal paintings that represented them in some way. I had been wanting to do more fantasy work so this was a good opportunity to create something in that genre. I used my likeness for both characters and the tree and the doorway are also from actual photo references.

$250 $125 plus shipping.
